National-level counselling is run by the examining body for the entrance itself and, for medicine, by the central medical counselling committee. The authority publishes the marking scheme, the qualifying criteria and the final merit list; states then run their own state-quota counselling off that same list.

Boards and exams that apply

National entrance scores are combined with your Class 12 board percentage. NTA publishes the normalised subject scores used for every participating university, and the board percentage you supply must be your printed Class 12 percentage.

How national usually runs

1. 1 Qualify in the entrance examination first. Only qualified candidates enter the merit list at all.
2. 2 Register on the national counselling portal during the published registration window.
3. 3 Choose participating colleges and courses in the order you prefer, from Dream to the least preferred.
4. 4 Seats are allotted in rounds. Keep every realistic preference available because a seat may close early.
5. 5 Report to the allotted institution with your original documents and confirm the fee deadline.
