What this cutoff score means
The number this calculator produces is your merit or cutoff score, measured out of 200. Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) does not publish a rank directly from your marks; it converts your marks into this single normalised score and then ranks every eligible candidate against it.
During counselling, your score is compared against the closing cutoff of each course and college. If your score is at or above the closing score for a course in your preferred college list, you become eligible to be offered that seat in that round. Cutoffs move every year because candidate volume, exam difficulty and the reservation seat matrix all change, so treat this number as an estimate of your position — not a guaranteed admission.
The score alone is not enough. Your reservation category, your domicile, the quota you are eligible for (such as management, minority, or government quota), and the number of seats available in that course all feed into the final allotment. If two candidates land on the same score, the tie-breaking order published by Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) decides who is placed higher.
Because this rule is not a single exam score, it combines 3 separate inputs. Enter each value exactly as printed on your own marksheet — the official formula only works on the same scale the authority used.
What you need to enter
Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) builds this cutoff from the following values. Take the numbers from your own Class 12 marksheet or entrance scorecard — do not round or estimate them.
| Input | Range | Unit | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maths Mathematics Marks | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Enter 12th board marks in Mathematics (max 100) |
| Physics Physics Marks | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Enter 12th board marks in Physics (max 100) |
| Chemistry Chemistry Marks | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Enter 12th board marks in Chemistry (max 100) |
Practical marks and internal assessment are included when the authority includes them. Check the official brochure on www.tneaonline.org before entering values.
Formula & step-by-step breakdown
Governing equation
Cutoff = Mathematics + (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2)
Final merit score: 200 marks (/ 200). This is the exact rule published by Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) for 2025-2026 admissions.
Printed notation
Cutoff (out of 200) = Mathematics + (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2)
Exactly as written in the official admission brochure. Shown as plain text for clarity.
Step-by-step calculation
Work through these 4 steps in order and you will arrive at the same score this page calculates for you. Each step is the published rule, not an approximation.

Official rules & eligibility
These are the conditions published by Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE). A strong cutoff score does not help if you fail any of them.
Applicable for Tamil Nadu 12th State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and other recognized equivalent boards.
If CBSE or other boards have total marks out of 100 per subject, enter them directly. If any subject was evaluated out of 200 or 50, normalize to 100 before applying.
Minimum qualifying aggregate in PCM: General (OC) 45%, BC/BCM/MBC/DNC/SC/SCA/ST 40%.
Category-wise qualifying marks
- General Category (OC): Minimum 45% average in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Reserved Categories (BC / BCM / MBC / DNC / SC / SCA / ST): Minimum 40% average in PCM.
Your category certificate must be issued by the competent authority in the state where you are applying. A certificate for a different state or a community not notified in that state will not be accepted during counselling.
Tie-breaking order
When two or more applicants land on exactly the same cutoff score, Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) resolves the rank position using the following hierarchy, in order:
- 1. Percentage of marks in Mathematics
- 2. Percentage of marks in Physics
- 3. Percentage of marks in optional subject (Chemistry / Biology / Computer Science)
- 4. Percentage of total marks in 12th Board Examination
- 5. Candidate older in age will be ranked higher
- 6. Random number assigned by TNEA (higher random number gets precedence)
Your final rank also depends on your reservation category, domicile and the seats available in the round. Two candidates with identical scores and identical subject marks can still finish in different positions because a reserved candidate is ranked within the reserved list for that course.
TNEA Engineering questions answered
The questions students ask most about this specific admission rule.
What is a good TNEA cutoff for top colleges like CEG, MIT, or SSN?
For tier-1 colleges like College of Engineering Guindy (CEG), MIT Chromepet, and PSG Tech in high-demand branches like Computer Science or AI&DS, the OC cutoff usually exceeds 195.0 to 198.5.
Are practical marks included in the subject marks?
Yes, the total mark printed on your Class 12 mark sheet for each subject (Theory + Practical + Internal) out of 100 must be entered.
How TNEA Engineering compares to other entrance exams
Cutoff scores are not comparable across exams because each authority normalises differently. What you can compare is the structure of each rule: the maximum score, how many inputs it takes, and how the components are weighted.
| Calculator | State | Max score | Weighting rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| TNEA Engineering This page | Tamil Nadu | 200 / 200 | Cutoff = Mathematics + (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2) |
| TNAU Agriculture | Tamil Nadu | 200 / 200 | Cutoff = (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2) + (Biology / 2) + (4th Subject / 2) — Biology may be one 100-mark subject or the SUM of Botany + Zoology (out of 200) |
| KCET Engineering | Karnataka | 100 % / 100 | Combined Score = ((Board PCM / 300) * 50) + ((KCET PCM / 180) * 50) |
| EAPCET Cutoff | Andhra Pradesh & Telangana | 100 / 100 | Composite = ((EAPCET Score / 160) * 75) + ((Inter Group % / 100) * 25) |
| TN Paramedical | Tamil Nadu | 200 / 200 | Cutoff = Biology + ((Physics + Chemistry) / 2) |
| TANUVAS Cutoff | Tamil Nadu | 200 / 200 | Cutoff = Biology + ((Physics + Chemistry) / 2) |
| KEAM Index | Kerala | 600 / 600 | KEAM Index = Entrance Scaled (300) + Board Scaled (300), where Board Scaled = Maths (150) + Physics (90) + Chemistry (60) |
What to do after you get your cutoff
-
1. Compare against last year's closing cutoff
Find the closing score for each of your preferred colleges and branches for 2025-2026, then check whether your score clears it. Closing cutoffs, not opening cutoffs, are the realistic benchmark.
-
2. Register for counselling on the official portal
Only Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) can allot you a seat. Complete the counselling registration on the official website, keep the application number safe, and pay the counselling fee within the published deadline.
-
3. Get your certificates ready early
Community, nativity, income and disability certificates take weeks. Apply through your school or the taluk office as soon as the certificate window opens, because you cannot choose a preferred college without them.
-
4. Build a wide preference list
Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) usually allots in rounds. A long, realistic preference list of colleges and branches protects you if your first choice is filled in an earlier round.
-
5. Keep a second option in a nearby state
We already publish 5 verified calculators for Tamil Nadu, so you can check a backup admission route in the same counselling system.
-
6. Save or share your result
Use the share or copy button above to keep a record of the score and the inputs you used — it hands you text you can paste anywhere. Printing still works from the browser's own Ctrl + P, which leaves out the controls and keeps the score, the breakdown and the formula. Both help when filling the counselling form and when checking with a mentor.
Looking at a different state?
If you are also applying outside Tamil Nadu, these admission rules are governed by different authorities with different weightage formulas, so their cutoff scores are not directly comparable with yours.
