What this cutoff score means
The number this calculator produces is your merit or cutoff score, measured out of 400. Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) does not publish a rank directly from your marks; it converts your marks into this single normalised score and then ranks every eligible candidate against it.
During counselling, your score is compared against the closing cutoff of each course and college. If your score is at or above the closing score for a course in your preferred college list, you become eligible to be offered that seat in that round. Cutoffs move every year because candidate volume, exam difficulty and the reservation seat matrix all change, so treat this number as an estimate of your position — not a guaranteed admission.
The score alone is not enough. Your reservation category, your domicile, the quota you are eligible for (such as management, minority, or government quota), and the number of seats available in that course all feed into the final allotment. If two candidates land on the same score, the tie-breaking order published by Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) decides who is placed higher.
Because this rule is not a single exam score, it combines 4 separate inputs. Enter each value exactly as printed on your own marksheet — the official formula only works on the same scale the authority used.
What you need to enter
Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) builds this cutoff from the following values. Take the numbers from your own Class 12 marksheet or entrance scorecard — do not round or estimate them.
| Input | Range | Unit | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject 1 Core Subject 1 (e.g. Commerce / Physics / Maths) | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Core Subject 1 (e.g. Commerce / Physics / Maths) exactly as printed on your marksheet. |
| Subject 2 Core Subject 2 (e.g. Accountancy / Chemistry) | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Core Subject 2 (e.g. Accountancy / Chemistry) exactly as printed on your marksheet. |
| Subject 3 Core Subject 3 (e.g. Economics / Biology / CS) | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Core Subject 3 (e.g. Economics / Biology / CS) exactly as printed on your marksheet. |
| Subject 4 Core Subject 4 (e.g. Business Maths / Optional) | 0 to 100 (step 0.5) | out of 100 | Core Subject 4 (e.g. Business Maths / Optional) exactly as printed on your marksheet. |
Practical marks and internal assessment are included when the authority includes them. Check the official brochure on tngasa.in before entering values.
Formula & step-by-step breakdown
Governing equation
Cutoff = Core Subject 1 + Core Subject 2 + Core Subject 3 + Core Subject 4
Final merit score: 400 marks (/ 400). This is the exact rule published by Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) for 2025-2026 admissions.
Printed notation
Cutoff (out of 400) = Core Subject 1 (100) + Core Subject 2 (100) + Core Subject 3 (100) + Core Subject 4 (100)
Exactly as written in the official admission brochure. Shown as plain text for clarity.
Step-by-step calculation
Work through these 2 steps in order and you will arrive at the same score this page calculates for you. Each step is the published rule, not an approximation.

Official rules & eligibility
These are the conditions published by Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE). A strong cutoff score does not help if you fail any of them.
Official method issued by Directorate of Collegiate Education, Chennai.
Language papers (Part 1 Tamil/Language and Part 2 English) are excluded for calculating rank cutoff in major courses (B.Com, B.Sc, BCA, BBA).
For B.A. English or B.A. Tamil admissions, Part 2 English or Part 1 Tamil marks respectively are used for specific ranking.
Tie-breaking order
When two or more applicants land on exactly the same cutoff score, Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) resolves the rank position using the following hierarchy, in order:
- 1. Higher marks in the specific major subject of the course applied
- 2. Total marks obtained in 12th standard
- 3. Date of birth (older candidate ranked higher)
Your final rank also depends on your reservation category, domicile and the seats available in the round. Two candidates with identical scores and identical subject marks can still finish in different positions because a reserved candidate is ranked within the reserved list for that course.
TNGASA Arts & Science questions answered
The questions students ask most about this specific admission rule.
Are Tamil and English included for B.Com cutoff in Tamil Nadu?
No. B.Com and B.Sc admission cutoffs in Tamil Nadu Government Arts & Science colleges are calculated out of 400 marks from the four core commerce or science subjects only.
How TNGASA Arts & Science compares to other entrance exams
Cutoff scores are not comparable across exams because each authority normalises differently. What you can compare is the structure of each rule: the maximum score, how many inputs it takes, and how the components are weighted.
| Calculator | State | Max score | Weighting rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| TNGASA Arts & Science This page | Tamil Nadu | 400 / 400 | Cutoff = Core Subject 1 + Core Subject 2 + Core Subject 3 + Core Subject 4 |

What to do after you get your cutoff
-
1. Compare against last year's closing cutoff
Find the closing score for each of your preferred colleges and branches for 2025-2026, then check whether your score clears it. Closing cutoffs, not opening cutoffs, are the realistic benchmark.
-
2. Register for counselling on the official portal
Only Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) can allot you a seat. Complete the counselling registration on the official website, keep the application number safe, and pay the counselling fee within the published deadline.
-
3. Get your certificates ready early
Community, nativity, income and disability certificates take weeks. Apply through your school or the taluk office as soon as the certificate window opens, because you cannot choose a preferred college without them.
-
4. Build a wide preference list
Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) usually allots in rounds. A long, realistic preference list of colleges and branches protects you if your first choice is filled in an earlier round.
-
5. Keep a second option in a nearby state
We already publish 5 verified calculators for Tamil Nadu, so you can check a backup admission route in the same counselling system.
-
6. Save or share your result
Use the share or copy button above to keep a record of the score and the inputs you used — it hands you text you can paste anywhere. Printing still works from the browser's own Ctrl + P, which leaves out the controls and keeps the score, the breakdown and the formula. Both help when filling the counselling form and when checking with a mentor.
Looking at a different state?
If you are also applying outside Tamil Nadu, these admission rules are governed by different authorities with different weightage formulas, so their cutoff scores are not directly comparable with yours.
